It was a good question.  Job asked it as he was going through the lowest moment of his life (to put it mildly).  As Job responded to one of his accusatory friends and, in a sense, to God, he said, “What is man, that Thou shouldest magnify him? and that Thou shouldest set Thine heart upon him?” (Job 7:17)  In other words, Job was asking, “What’s the big deal about man?”  Well, you can look at the answer in one of two ways.  One point of view is that of the recently-deceased theoretical physicist, Stephen Hawking, who once said, “We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.”  And then there’s the opposite point of view as seen in the Bible.  Genesis 1:27 tells us, “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.”  There it is: “An Advanced Breed of Monkeys” versus “Made in the Image of God.”  By the way, the fact that man can study to understand the universe isn’t just true about Dr. Hawking’s point of view; it’s also a fact for the Biblical side.  There’s no doubt: the advantage definitely lies in the Biblical answer to “What is man?”  In fact, the truth lies there.  Man as a “fearfully and wonderfully made” creation of God sets us apart from the animals.  It gives us a special place in the heart of the One to whom we are accountable. And when a person accepts Jesus Christ as Savior, his Creator is now a loving Heavenly Father who has a place reserved in Heaven for him.  And that’s exactly the conclusion Job came to at the end of his story.  And I agree.  I’m no kin to any monkey.  By His grace, I’m a member of the family of God!
