She felt forgotten.  Alone.  Ashamed.  She bore the cultural stigma of being childless.  Her husband assured her of his love and care, but it didn’t help.  I guess it was because his other wife had borne him children, something she couldn’t do.  And on top of that, this “other woman” had it in for her, reminding her on a regular basis of her barrenness and doing all she could to get under her skin.  She was broken and filled with, as the Scripture calls it,  a “bitterness of soul.”  When she cried out in her brokenness to the Lord, she was accused of being drunk.  No one seemed to understand, and some didn’t even seem to care.  But Hannah was not swayed from seeking God’s intervention and pouring out her soul before Him. Then, 1 Samuel 1:19 says something glorious: “and the Lord remembered her.”   God heard her cry, answered her prayer, and gave her a son named Samuel.  God remembered Hannah.  This is one of my favorite Mother’s Day stories, but the truth here isn’t just for ladies.  It’s for the broken, the heartsick, the shamed, the forgotten, anyone who needs a touch from God, male or female.  No matter what may be pressuring you from the outside or pummeling you from the inside, go to God.  Psalm 136:23 says it in another way. “Who remembered us in our low estate: for His mercy endureth forever.”  God remembers.  He forgives, strengthens, heals, and restores.  He turned Hannah’s bitterness of soul into, as she herself put it, “My heart rejoiceth in the Lord.”  God can do the same for you.
