It had been a long time coming, and history was about to be made.  The Second Continental Congress had appointed a committee to draft it, and the time had come for final discussion, revision, and approval.  A document they called “The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America” now lay before them.  And on July 4, 1776, it was adopted.  As I consider the vision and bravery of those men, it is the closing statement of the Declaration of Independence that reminds me of their commitment and determination in the quest for freedom for the thirteen colonies.  It reads like this: “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”  It’s said that Benjamin Franklin expressed it this way as he contemplated his signing of the Declaration: “We must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.”  One thought comes to my mind as I read those two statements.  Those men were “all in.”  Our founding fathers were completely committed to their cause and realized there was no turning back.  “All in.”  And there’s the challenge for you and me today.  Does our commitment to the Heavenly cause of Christ mirror that of the signers for their cause of liberty?  Are we “all in”?  Are we the living sacrifice Paul speaks of in Romans 12:1?  Are we the good soldiers of Jesus Christ seen in 2 Timothy 2:3?  Do we accept the challenge of our King in Luke 9:23 when He said, “If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me”?  Are we “all in,” no matter what, no matter where, no matter how long, no matter how much?  The signers were, and they penned their names on that document and into history.  May you and I faithfully be so for the cause of Christ!
