Have you ever felt like a change of scenery would be nice?  Perhaps the young shepherd, David, felt that way and was relieved to have the opportunity to leave his regular sheep-keeping duties for a trip to see his brothers who were serving in the army of Israel.  Even if it was just to be an errand boy.  His errand, as we see in 1 Samuel 17, was to simply carry some roasted corn, bread, and cheese to his siblings and their captains, to find out how they were doing, then return home.  But, of course, you know what happened next.  The godless Goliath was out there challenging the people of God, and they all, including King Saul, cowered in faithless fear.  David wondered out loud why nothing was being done and began to ask around about the lack of action.  His oldest brother rebuked him, and David responded with the classic statement, “Is there not a cause?”  Now was that boldness or youthful boasting?  Was he standing up or just spouting off?  I think we find the answer just a short while later as David, the young shepherd boy, faced the seasoned Philistine warrior.  After the giant’s blasphemous rant, David let him know that he was taking his stand so “that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel” (v. 46).  The “cause” David was standing for had nothing to do with him, but everything to do with His God.  And it was a stand that God honored!  As children of God, we have the same purpose today.  Our lives should be lived out for the sole purpose of making sure others know our Lord as the one true God and Savior of the world.  Be bold for Christ today!  Because, “is there not a cause?”
