When we read the Christmas story, we usually go to the gospels of Luke and Matthew, don’t we? We do that because that’s where we find the details God has given us concerning the announcement and birth of the Savior. And I enjoy reading those passages over and over, year after year. I don’t know about you, but they always speak to me; that’s the power of God’s word! But this week, my mind has been on a single verse in John’s gospel that is as close as he gets to the Christmas story. “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). Not many details there, but what a message! What really caught my eye (really, my heart) this year is that last phrase, “full of grace and truth.” That’s who Jesus is and why He came. He is “full” (replete, completely filled up) of truth. Truth for all the questions of life. Truth about who I am, what I’m doing here, and where I’m going. In fact, He Himself said, “I am the…truth.” No matter what I wonder about this Christmas season or any time of the year, Christ is the answer. It’s found in Him and His written word. Truth. But that’s not all. He came replete with grace as well. Grace for all the circumstances of life. Grace for every hurt, every trial, every tear, and especially for every sin. Grace that saves, that sustains, that strengthens. Grace. So this year as you read the Christmas story, spend a little time in John as well. Then, praise the One who came full of truth for all the questions of life and grace for all the circumstances of life. May you have a blessed Christmas worshiping our Savior!
