There’s a big game this weekend.  You may or may not be interested, but it’s big anyway.  Billions big.  What catches my attention about the Super Bowl isn’t just the game itself; it’s also the amount of money involved, and it bursts through the millions and wades deep into the billions of dollars.  The average ticket costs around $7000.  The ads average a little over $5 million per 30 seconds.  The average Miami hotel is going for over $500 per night.  Not going to the game?  The average fan watching the game on TV will spend $88 per person on snacks, fan gear, etc.  Total money spent?  This year, projections put it at just over $17 billion.  Yep, this game is definitely billions big.  Oh, and by the way, we’re looking at $6.8 billion in bets placed on the game.  And all this has me wondering out loud today, so please bear with me.  I wonder if this is a snapshot of the mentality in our country.  I wonder why we are ready to drop so much money so quickly on a game or anything else that entertains us, yet we who are believers are sometimes hesitant to give to God’s work.  I wonder why we do not have the same interest in investing in eternity by giving to the Lord.  I wonder how we can afford the sports, the shopping, the restaurants, the trips, the hobbies, the movies, and so forth, but we can’t afford tithes and offerings.  I wonder if we’ve shown our true heart as Matthew 6:21 says, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”  Looking at where we spend our money may cause us to wonder if our heart is really in God’s work at all.  I’m not saying don’t watch the game, go out to eat, take a trip, or anything else.  I’m just saying look at your finances and think about where your heart is when it comes to what really matters for eternity.  I’m just wondering out loud today….
