John Thomas was through. He was qualified, well-liked, a leader of men, and a true patriot. Yet he was passed over for an important promotion in the newly formed Continental Army, so he decided to resign his position. It was July of 1775, and things weren’t looking good for the colonies’ cause of independence from Great Britain. General Washington could ill-afford the blow that Thomas’ resignation would bring, so he wrote him a personal note imploring him to remain. A line from that note caught my eye in the book I’m reading about this period in our history. When it came to what many in that day referred to as “The Cause,” George Washington said this to John Thomas: “surely every post ought to be deemed honorable in which a man can serve his country.” Thomas changed his mind, remained involved, and even gave his life in the battle for independence. You and I, as citizens of Heaven, also have a cause. We have a responsibility. We each have “a post” in the Lord’s service. And no matter where or what that duty is, it surely should be deemed honorable. Perhaps you feel that you don’t or can’t make a difference. Well, to put it bluntly, you’re wrong. Read 1 Corinthians 12, especially verses 26 and 27. “And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honored, all the members rejoice with it. Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.” So man your post. Do your duty. Honor your Commander-in Chief. Stay the course. Remain true to the Heavenly Cause.
