As we begin another year, isn’t it good to know that that which matters most is the same?  We’ve talked about this in our services here at Berean the first couple of weeks in 2023.  Our God and His word are unchanging.  The gospel that brings salvation endures unaltered.  God’s grace is still sufficient.  His goal for us to be conformed to the image of Christ remains the same.  This assurance of the unchanging brings security and stability to the child of God in a rapidly and sometimes frustratingly changing world.  But early this morning as I thought about today’s note, I considered something else that hasn’t changed.  Something we must not overlook nor ever underestimate: the enemy.  Yes, we must stay focused on our unchanging Father, but it is important to keep in mind the unrelenting foe.  In 2023, Satan is still the roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.  He’s still the daily accuser of the brethren.  The tempter, the god of this world, the deceiver, the father of lies, the crafty serpent, and the adversary of all God is and all God seeks to do to save sinners and grow the saints.  None of that has changed.  No matter how long we have been saved, no matter how committed we may be, Satan remains on the prowl.  And added to that, we face the world system that opposes God and, last but certainly not least, our own sinful nature that wars against the indwelling Holy Spirit.  We must never forget that we are still in a battle zone.  Now, all this is not to make us fear or be discouraged.  It simply brings us full circle to remind us of our desperate need of the unchanging God.  Let us live this year in full dependence on our Lord, fully dressed in His armor, fully submersed in His Word, and fully surrendered to His will.  Yes, our enemy is still alive and on the attack, but our God is still God.  Remember, “greater is He that is in you than He that is in the world.”
