He was a career soldier.  Once he enlisted, he was all in.  Yes, there were times of R&R, but mostly he was on the front lines, face to face with the enemy.  I’m sure that he had moments of weariness, doubt, and struggle, but as you look at what is written about him, you simply encounter a faithful soldier.  A veteran who finished well.  One who died with his boots on.  And just before he gave his life for the Cause, he penned the words that speak volumes as to his commitment and provide a great challenge to you and me.  He wrote, “I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.  I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”  Yes, once the Apostle Paul suited up in God’s armor, he remained steadfast, unmovable, and always abounding until the day he was led to that executioner’s block and then stepped into the presence of his King.  This week, we have honored those who have served in our country’s military, and rightly so.  But let’s do something else.  Let’s also be reminded of our responsibilities to follow Paul’s example of faithfulness to the Savior.  As the hymn says, “Who is on the Lord’s side?  Who will serve the King?  Who will be His helpers, other lives to bring?  Who will leave the world’s side?  Who will face the foe?  Who is on the Lord’s side?  Who for Him will go?  By Thy call of mercy, by Thy grace divine, we are on the Lord’s side; Savior, we are Thine.”
