Spring is in the air!  Literally.  It’s a little early in Middle Georgia this year, but you can see it everywhere.  Yes, I’m talking about the pollen.  That yellow cloud that settles on everything, giving things a noticeably yellow tint.  It’s almost as if you can feel it coating you as you walk outside.  And the allergy symptoms are right behind it, of course.  I’ve done some study on pollen (because it gets me this time of year) and have found out that it’s mostly what you can’t see that really wreaks havoc.  That visible yellow stuff looks bad, but all that microscopic tree, grass, etc. pollen is what does the most damage.  All that pollen you can’t see gets in and creates what you can see – the sniffing, sneezing, coughing, and more.  What you can’t see on the inside causing problems on the outside……  Yes, there is a spiritual truth there.  You see, it’s the same with our lives.  What’s on the inside can make or break us on the outside.  Proverbs 23:7 says, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.”  Matthew 12:34-35 teaches, “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.  A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.”  And that’s why God says, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23).  So I guess the question for me (and you) today is this: how is my heart?  Am I guarding my heart?  Allowing God to search my heart and show me the truth?  Asking God to “create in me a clean heart”?  Sure, that yellow pollen looks to be a problem, but it’s mostly exterior.  It’s what we can’t see that gets inside and creates the visible symptoms.  Same for our spiritual life.  Again, how’s your heart?
