It all started with the words, “Mr. Watson, come here.  I want to see you.”  When Alexander Graham Bell made that first phone call 139 years ago this week, I don’t think he had any idea where modern communication was headed.  Obviously, there isn’t enough time or space here to give a history of communication, so let’s just jump to where we are today.  And what a jump!  Telephones (the “old-fashioned” ones in your house).  Cell phones.  Email.  Voicemail.  Text.  Twitter.  FaceTime.  Facebook.  Facebook Messenger.  Snapchat.  Skype.  Instagram.  Pinterest.  WhatsApp.  Did I [insert sarcastic tone here] leave anything out?  Obviously, that’s just a very partial list.  I don’t even use all of the ones I mentioned, much less the mountain of ones I didn’t put down or have never heard of.  If you’re like me, it’s hard to keep up with and respond to the messages just from the means of communication I use.  I miss calls.  Forget to answer texts or check Messenger.  Emails get buried.  Facebook overloads me with information.  Tweets?  Not interested.  I do the best I can, but sometimes I miss something – maybe from you.  As much as I want to, and as much as it matters, there are times I just can’t or simply forget to respond.  And that got me to thinking.  I’m glad my Heavenly Father isn’t like that.  Imagine how many people are calling on Him at any given moment!  Staggering would be a gross understatement.  Yet, the line is never busy, nor does it ever go to voicemail.  No phone tag, either.  And none of the “Due to a high call volume, we are unable to take your call right now.”  He’s there; He’s listening; He’s available.  Always.  Just for me.  And you.  No wonder King David was able to say in Psalm 86:7, “In the day of my trouble I will call upon Thee; for Thou wilt answer me.”  Indeed, communication has come a long way since Mr. Bell first spoke to Mr. Watson.  But there isn’t now nor will there ever be anything that can beat this blessed simplicity of prayer: “I will call…Thou wilt answer”!  Have you talked to Him today?
