He was tired.  Didn’t want to talk, didn’t want to play, didn’t want to eat.  He only wanted to lay his head down and rest, and that’s what he did.  The other night, Tina and I were taking care of our 7-month-old grandson, Wesley, and he had no other interest than laying his head on his grandmama’s shoulder and going to sleep.  As I watched him, I saw him at complete peace in the arms of someone who loves him.  And the thought came to me that we all need the same thing.  King David sure did as he fled from the rebellion initiated by his own son, Absalom.  David was harried, hurried, hunted, and, according to some, in a helpless situation.  No help, his enemies said, not even in God.  Read about it in Psalm 3.  But like little Wesley, the king knew He could count on the One who loved him.  Listen to his words: “But Thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.  I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and He heard me out of His holy hill.  Selah.  I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me.”  Then, in the next Psalm, David writes, “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8).  Just like King David, we can find peace, security, and rest in the arms of the God who loves and watches over us.  And remember, He is the God who “shall neither slumber nor sleep” (Psalm 121:4).  That’s a pretty good lesson from a 7-month-old!
