All was well, or so he thought.  But then everything changed when they found that book.  It’s the story of King Josiah in 2 Kings 22-23, and I hope you’ll take some time this weekend to read it.  We looked at it here at church on Wednesday night, and I can’t get the story off my mind.  Josiah was living for his God in the pattern of his ancestor King David.  By and by he decided to make repairs on the Temple, and during those repairs, someone reported, “I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord.”  Well, they brought the copy of the Word to the king and read it to him, and it hit Josiah like a ton of bricks.  As you read the passage, you’ll see that he “rent his clothes” in grief and repentance, led in purging the Lord’s temple and the kingdom of all traces of idolatry as well as the leaders of that idolatry, and then oversaw the greatest celebration of Passover since the times of the judges.  Yes, King Josiah was doing what he thought he should do, that is, until he laid the Scriptures on top of everything.  And what a difference that made!  His eyes were opened, sin and its source were dealt with, and the Lord was worshipped like never before.  I believe that’s exactly what we need.  You know, it’s easy to fall into a routine and think we’re ok, cruising along in our Christian walk, until we really pay attention to God’s Word.  Only as we lay the straight measuring stick of the Scripture alongside our lives will we see the crookedness, the deviations, the drifting, and the true way back.  The lesson we learn from Josiah is that it’s not how we think we’re doing but how God says we’re doing as revealed in His word.  So, find “The Book.”  Dive in and listen to what it says.  Let it convict, correct, and change you.  That’s what it did for King Josiah, and that’s what it’ll do for you and me.
