I just changed my mind.  I was heading one way for today’s topic, but then I got the news and changed directions.  But before I began typing, I had to stop and sit for a while just to absorb it.  Almost surreal.  And I still don’t really know what to say.  How can a few words in a short note truly convey the monumental nature of what just happened?  What news you ask?  Around 10:00 this morning the Supreme Court of the United States handed down their decision on the State of Mississippi’s restrictive abortion law and essentially overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade case, thus declaring that there is no Constitutional right to abortion and returning the power to the individual states to allow, limit, or ban the practice of abortion.  First and foremost, praise the Lord!  Abortion numbers have increased over the last few years, adding to the 60 million+ lives wrongfully and immorally taken in their mothers’ wombs.  As one headline put it, “Roe is dead; babies can live.”  Take a moment right now and thank the Lord for this decision.  It is what we have prayed for, worked for, and spoke out for for years.  And years.  And years.  With today’s news also comes a few other practical observations.  Voting matters.  Being involved in public policy matters.  Communicating with elected officials matters.  Staying informed on issues matters.  Persistence in truth matters.  All these mattered in the past and still matter moving forward.  Now, let’s understand this: the Supreme Court did not make abortion wrong today; God’s word has always declared that.  Second, the battle is not over since this issue is now in the hands of the 50 states and their legislatures.  We must remain engaged for God’s truth concerning life.  So, we clap for joy and give thanks today, and then we buckle up and keep standing in the days to come.  “Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is His reward.”
