I got off the phone a little while ago, and I’m still shaking my head.  Someone called me here at the church and unburdened their heart.  And it was a lot of unburdening.  I don’t know how people can hold up in circumstances like this outside of God’s grace.  By the way, let me say that it was no one in our church or even in the Middle Georgia area; it was an acquaintance that needed someone to reach out to.  In the voice I could hear heartbreak, burden, tears, yet through it all I heard the strength of God’s grace.  It brought to my mind some verses I read this morning from Psalm 46.  “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.  Selah.”  We all have times when we need these verses.  And we all have times when we desperately need these verses.  Then there are the times when we would not survive without the truth of these verses.  My favorite part of the passage is “a very present help.”  When we need a place of safety, God is there.  When we need strength, God is there.  When trouble surrounds us, there He is.  When our world is shaken, He’s not moved; He’s there.  When everything changes, He doesn’t.  When floods of trial and despair pound at our door, He holds us fast.  Whenever and wherever you need your God, He is your “very present help.”  Lean on Him for what you’re facing.  If you’re not facing a trial today, lean on God anyway, for there’s never truly a day when we don’t need Him!
