“I’m running a little behind.”  Ever heard that?  Ever said that?  I know I have.  In today’s busy world it’s a common expression, and sometimes the “little” becomes “way,” as in “waaaay behind.”  And at times, no matter how hard we try, we still run behind or end up just plain late!  Unexpected issues, unplanned delays, the inability to be in two places at once, or simply “Murphy’s Law” can all contribute to that.  Martha was thinking along those lines in John 11:21 when she told the Lord Jesus, “Lord, if Thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.”  She and Mary had sent for Jesus to come and heal their brother, Lazarus.  Instead, by the time Jesus showed up, Lazarus had already died.  Four days earlier, no less.  Basically, Martha was telling Him, “Jesus, you’re late!”  Mary said the same thing a short while later (see verse 32).  It was clear that the Lord had not met their planned timetable.  While true, did that make Him late?  Absolutely not!  Jesus had a plan to do something greater than just heal Lazarus; He planned to raise Him from the dead!  He told his disciples that in verse 11 when He said, “Our friend Lazarus sleepeth [is dead]; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.”  Jesus was too late to do what Mary and Martha had planned, but right on time to do what He planned!  Remember, with our Lord, nothing is unexpected, nothing is unplanned, being in two places at once is one of His attributes, and “Murphy’s Law” is trumped by His omnipotence.  You can trust Him and His timing; He’s never late!
