It took a little while to do, but it was good.  Definitely worth it.  I’m talking about reading through Psalm 119 in our Wednesday night service.  All 176 verses.  Out loud.  Psalm 119 is an exaltation of God’s word that, if taken to heart, will cure even the most apathetic attitude a believer could have toward the Scriptures.  There’s certainly no time or space in this note to go into detail, so allow me to focus on just one of several verses that caught my attention as we read through the Psalm on Wednesday evening.  It’s verse 28.  “My soul melteth for heaviness: strengthen Thou me according unto Thy word.”  I guess that one stood out because of the heat we’ve experienced around here this summer and the word “melteth” that’s found in the verse.  Thinking of that, have you ever felt as if your soul is melting?  Dripping with despair?  Caving in under the weight of circumstances?  So did the writer of this Psalm.  But the writer also knew the solution – the healing strength of the Scriptures that can shore up the cave-in and restore the melted heart back to a firm and established heart of faith.  Charles Spurgeon put it like this in his comments on this passage: “He was dissolving away in tears.  The solid strength of his constitution was turning to liquid as if molten by the furnace heat of his afflictions.  Heaviness of heart is a killing thing, and when it abounds it threatens to turn life into a long death, in which a man seems to drop away in a perpetual drip of grief.  Lord, when we dissolve with weakness, make Thy word to be the bread of heaven to strengthen us.”  So today, if you’re identifying with this Psalm’s writer, why not take time to slowly and meditatively read through Psalm 119?  Allow the cool, soothing flow of God’s word to pull you through the searing heat of life’s trials.  I guess you could call it air conditioning for the soul!
