I’ve heard it more than once over the last couple of weeks.  Maybe you have as well.  “God’s sure trying to get our attention!”  I understand why that statement or something similar to it is being tossed around.  The hurricanes, wildfires, and earthquakes of recent weeks have certainly been the center of many conversations.  As I said, I get it; I know natural disasters and other things like these tend to make us stop and think.  And no doubt the Lord has and will use things like this to make us do just that.  But there’s something else I thought about.  Doesn’t God always want our attention?  Every day?  And doesn’t He use things other than natural disasters?  Think Elijah.  I Kings 19.  God’s prophet was running scared and throwing himself a big pity party.  And God wanted to get his attention.  Verses 11 and 12 tell us that a great wind (think hurricane or tornado) came along, but God wasn’t in it.  Then, an earthquake.  Not there either.  Lastly, a fire.  Nope.  But then came the attention-getter.  Just a “still, small voice.”  You could call it a whisper from the gentle stillness.  And that’s how God spoke.  I believe if we look for it, God wants to get our attention every day.  I saw it in the beauty of a sunrise the other day.  A cup of coffee and an open Bible in the early morning.  The murmur of voices united in prayer at church on Wednesday night.  A gentle breeze trying to tease Summer out and Fall in.  The laughter and joy of a family celebrating a birthday (Happy birthday today, Mom!).  Sometimes God does use the big things to turn our thoughts to Him, but more often than not, it’s the still, small voice.  And it’s there every day if we just pay attention.  Are you listening?
