Being Easter, this is the weekend you usually see them, for the most part, in church yards.  But this year, you see them more often in your neighborhood yards and maybe in your own yard.  I’m talking about a cross.  As I’ve driven around this past week or so (yes, essential travel!), I have noticed many homes with a cross, and sometimes two crosses, in their yards.  Most have lights on them; some have a red ribbon or bow as well.  We have heard much talk about “Faith over Fear,” the blood of Christ, and the need to seek the Lord.  Even our government leaders, from the President down, are calling on us to go to God.  Honestly, it’s refreshing to see the Lord and our Savior’s cross at the forefront of people’s minds.  It appears that through COVID-19 God has gotten our attention.  And that’s a good thing!  But as I drove this morning I began to wonder; God has our attention, but will He keep our attention when this is over?  When the restaurants are open for business.  When our work routine returns to normal.  When professional and collegiate sports start selling tickets again.  When those youth sports and travel teams seek to once again dominate our schedule.  When the nice weather on weekends calls for us to do something besides church.  Will we remember the lessons learned?  Will we remember our need of God?  Will we remember that Jesus said taking up the cross is a daily act?  Or will we simply slide back to our pre-coronavirus life?  Yes, God has our attention.  But for Him to keep it, the powerful message and meaning of the cross needs to be in our hearts, not just our yards.  Through this time, draw close to God.  And when it’s over, draw closer.
