It’s something I’d never thought of before. Perhaps you have, but I haven’t. Meditating through the Christmas story this morning, I came to Luke 2:16: “And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the babe lying in a manger.” It’s speaking of the shepherds, of course, who, once they heard the angel’s announcement, said, “Let us now go….” My question is, how did they find them? Remember, because of the Roman-mandated census, Bethlehem was incredibly crowded. Wall to wall people. And the only directions we see given to those shepherds was “Bethlehem.” No address. No real description of a place except for “a manger,” and how many mangers do you think were in and around Bethlehem? But find them they did. Despite the unexpected and shocking words of the angel, despite all the hustle and bustle, despite the unknown exact location, despite everything, they found Jesus. Actually, the word “found” in that verse gives the idea of a search, perhaps even an intense search, before finding. In other words, they looked until they found Him. Maybe the Lord miraculously led them, maybe they did a lot of asking around, or maybe some of both. What we do know is that they were determined to drop what they were doing in those fields and immediately look for the baby they’d heard about. And they found Him. And there’s a lesson there for us. Let’s be sure to do the same this Christmas – find Jesus. In the midst of the unexpected, the hustle and bustle, or even the challenge of the unknown, look for Him. Leave the flocks, fight through the crowds, ask and seek, and find yourself beside the manger. Remember who He is and why He came. Worship Him. Thank Him. Consecrate yourself to Him. Then, do what the shepherds did: go tell someone about Him. Have a blessed and joyous Christmas!
