Well, it’s over.  The final horn sounded, confetti fell, the trophy was presented, more confetti, emotional interviews, and yesterday, a parade.  And, oh yes, somewhere in there a trip to Disney World.  Yep, Super Bowl LII is history, and the numbers were staggering.  No, I’m not talking about the game statistics (and they were record-breaking); it’s the money spent just for this game that grabbed my attention.  Examples?  Here are just a few.  The average ticket cost $2800.  For those famous Super Bowl ads, companies wrote checks for a total of $419 million.  Now, let’s leave “million” and talk about “billion.”  Sadly, the gambling bets placed were estimated to be at $4.76 billion.  Most estimates figure that for food, beverages, team apparel and accessories, TV’s, and decorations, Americans spent $15.3 billion for the game.  Blown away yet?  Here’s one more.  The National Chicken Council (yes, that’s real) estimated that Americans would eat 1.35 billion chicken wings for the Super Bowl, up 20 million from last year.  According to them, that’s 394 million feet of chicken wings – enough that a chicken could cross the road 13 million times.  Enough with the numbers.  That little bit of research I did on those expenses was brought on yesterday as I thought about a Biblical principle.  It’s the familiar truth from Matthew 6:21 that says, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”  Guess a whole lot of Americans have a really big heart for football.  Now, I certainly don’t begrudge anyone a good plate of wings, but it does make me wonder why we believers often do not have the same kind of heart for giving to the Lord.  For investing in eternity.  For making sure the Lord’s ministry has the resources to effectively make a spiritual difference.  For helping missionaries get to their place of calling around the world to share the wonderful gospel message with those that have never heard.  So how did this Super Bowl motivate me?  Did it make me want to throw on a uniform and play again?  Not in the least.  But it did remind me to stay faithful in laying up those “treasures in Heaven.”  What about you?
