Our church theme this year is one word: “Steadfast.” We began the year studying it, have sung about it in our services, signed emails and letters with it, and have dropped reminders about it here and there in sermons. So how are we doing? The real question is, are we living it? Are we staying true, staying by the stuff, staying at it, staying steadfast for the Lord? It’s a challenge to do so, for sure. But there’s a verse that we looked at during the Bible study on Wednesday night that, to me, is a foundation for our steadfastness. A principle that’s been dogging me for two or three weeks now (see the July 8 Pastor’s Heart). A simple statement that, as you really meditate on it, grows richer and deeper. The writer of Psalm 119:68 says of God, “Thou art good and doest good; teach me Thy statutes.” God is good and does good. Pretty basic, isn’t it? But it is a truth that will keep us steadfast through any situation. That is, if we truly and whole-heartedly embrace it. Take some time and think about that phrase today. And tomorrow. And the next day. And the next…. It’ll be an anchor; it will hold you fast. Steadfast.
