In the last week, the Lord has used Psalm 121 in three different instances in my life and teaching. This is one of them. Have you ever made the statement, “I don’t know if I’m coming or going!”? Most, if not all of us, probably have. When we feel that way, it’s usually a feeling of being overwhelmed or even confused by the pace or stress of a certain time or situation. Take heart, you’re not alone; in fact, King Solomon (the one we refer to as the wisest man who ever lived) felt just that way when he first ascended to the throne of Israel. 1 Kings 3:7 tells us that Solomon told the Lord, “I know not how to go out or come in.” And that’s exactly why he asked God for wisdom instead of wealth, power, or long life. Now here’s where Psalm 121 comes in. When we don’t know if we are “coming or going,” that’s ok. God knows. He’s in charge. You see, Psalm 121 is a “Song of Degrees.” A traveling song for pilgrims, if you will. And in verse 8 we see, “The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.” It’s true – as we walk in this pilgrimage we call life, heading for our eternal home, there are days and sometimes seasons that we don’t understand or simply do not care for. Even in those times, however, we can be sure that our Heavenly Father is on duty guarding and preserving every going out and every coming in. One comment on this verse says, “God watches over the believer all the time, in every circumstance, and forever.” Are you facing this “coming or going” scenario today? Take heart; nothing confuses or surprises our Lord. And certainly nothing is too hard for Him.
