“I can remember exactly where I was when….”  Each year approaching the 9/11 remembrance you hear that phrase, and perhaps more so this year with it being the 20th observance of the events of that horrible day.  It is fitting and proper to remember and honor those who lost their lives, those who gave their lives, and those loved ones who carry the grief of those losses even today.  September 11, 2001 was a national tragedy, and we who can remember where we were that morning still vividly recall when we first heard the stunning news.  I know I do.  But it’s not just 9/11 that sparks a memory of where we were and what we were doing.  Personal trials and tragedies do the same.  I’ve had moments in my life when dreadful news came, and I remember exactly where I was as if it were five minutes ago.  I’m sure you do as well.  But as we remember where we were and what we were doing, we need to remember something else.  Or should I say, Someone else.  It was true as we faced the horror of 9/11, and it’s true down to our personal struggles.  God was there.  God is there.  God will be there.  Haggai 1:13 reminds the people of God of this: “Then spake Haggai the Lord’s messenger in the Lord’s message unto the people, saying, I am with you, saith the Lord.”  A simple statement, yet it carries indescribable strength.  “I am with you.”  This weekend, as you remember and contemplate 9/11 (and you should), or as you face other dates of significant sorrow or pain, you may say, “I can remember exactly where I was when….”  But don’t stop there; go on and say, “I can remember exactly where God was when….  He was with me.”
