Being put on the spot can be uncomfortable.  Especially when something big is at stake.  Like God.  This past week Tina and I were privileged to be a part of the missions conference at Anthony Baptist Church in Jersey Shore, PA.  On Wednesday, we met an older missionary who pioneered a work with a small, remote, and previously unreached tribe in the jungles of Bolivia.  He and a few others were the first ones to make contact, learn the language, and preach the gospel to these people.  I listened as he recounted story after story of God’s miraculous protection, provision, and power in reaching the Araona tribe.  One story has to do with being put on the spot.  This brother and some men were working with machetes and shovels on the beginning of an airstrip.  The temperature was in the 130 degree range, and the men wilted in the heat.  The local shaman, or witchdoctor, came up to them as they rested and sarcastically asked why the missionary didn’t ask his God to send cooler weather in which to work and challenged him to do so if he believed his God was the true God.  You can imagine how the missionary felt.  He was on the spot.  As the Indians stood by and waited, the missionary realized he only had one good option.  He bowed his head and fervently asked God to manifest Himself by sending protection from the sun.  “Fervently” would be the key word here.  As he prayed, he felt a cool breeze on his cheek and looked up to find a cloud had suddenly come up and covered the sun, giving relief from the intense heat.  The shaman looked curiously at the missionary and slowly admitted that this God must truly be over all things, then he turned and walked away.  Hallelujah!  I’m glad that’s the God we serve!  The God over all things!  No wonder 1 Samuel 2:2 says, “There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside Thee: neither is there any rock like our God.”  Do you believe He is the God over all things?  Then trust Him for your trial.  Depend on Him for your decision.  Seek Him for strength.  Pray to Him for peace.  He’s real; He’s there; and He’s your Heavenly Father.
