I have to admit that I was nervous. It was looking good, very good, but still…. You never can tell. Yes, they were up 3 games to 2. Yes, they were winning 7-0 late in the game. Yes, I know how solid they were playing. But even knowing all that, I was still nervous. Nervous because I’d been let down before. And not just once. But they didn’t disappoint this time. The Atlanta Braves won the World Series! Please don’t judge me for being nervous or even a little negative as I watched the World Series this year. If you are a long-time Braves fan, I bet you felt the same, and I believe our nervousness was justified, given their past history. As I’ve thought about that since Tuesday night, something came to me. When we look around at the state of today’s society and the direction it’s going, we sometimes get nervous, feel anxious, or maybe even lose heart. We live expecting a 9th inning comeback by the enemy. Why do we get like that? Isn’t our hope in God? Isn’t He still sovereign? Aren’t His promises rock solid? Isn’t His eternal Word true? Isn’t he still the God who has never let us down, never disappointed us, never changed, and never wavered in the truth of His final victory? Yes, we can have absolute confidence “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:10-11). So, no matter how things look, don’t be nervous; God wins.
